Carmelo Anthony‘s situation in New York is surrounded by a lot of uncertainty lately with talks about getting traded intensifying by the day. Many believe he will be waiving his no-trade clause, especially if it’s for a deal to go to the Cleveland Cavaliers or L.A. Clippers. With the recent struggles of the team and his feud with Phil Jackson, it appears like it’s only a matter of time when he’ll have to leave the Knicks.
However, another scenario has been proposed by The Ringer through the trade machine where the Los Angeles Lakers are involved. By trading Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance, Jr. and Brandon Ingram, they’ll get Blake Griffin and veteran Paul Pierce in return, with the Knicks receiving the three young players. The Clippers would end up with Anthony and fill their need for a reliable small forward.
Although it makes sense on paper, it’s still easier said than done as there are a lot of factors to consider before making this blockbuster move a reality. For the Knicks, they’ll definitely improve with the move as they get more promising players they can use to build around Kristaps Porzingis — but with the investment they’ve had with Anthony and the experience he brings to the table, it’s hard to say if the Knicks would feel like they’re getting the better end of the deal.
The Lakers would finally be able to add a big name free agent to their roster. However, Griffin will be a free agent this coming summer and until he agreed to sign long-term with the Lakers, the chances of the Lakers agreeing to this trade would remain slim. Pierce on the other hand is playing in the final year of his stellar career, which would leave a hole at the small forward position for the Lakers after this season.
The Clippers have been looking for a wingman that can be relied upon that they can utilize for a lot of minutes during games. With Anthony’s ability to score and also act as a decoy, he definitely fits what the team is longing for. The foreseen issue though is that the Clippers have been vocal about wanting to sign Griffin again to keep their core intact. If they are not willing to part ways with the All-Star power forward, then this deal would most likely not push through.
More speculations are expected to come up in the next few weeks, and even with some scenarios making sense, it would still be Anthony’s decision in the end. He has the last say on a possible move since he owns a no-trade clause in his contract and until he agrees to waive it, he’ll remain a member of the Knicks.
