PRO DUTERTE MINIONS AT MEDIA NAGKASAGUTAN

Tensions rose between reporters and a group of President Rodrigo Duterte's supporters during a press conference on the group's plan to file an impeachment complaint against Vice President Leni Robredo.
The group, composed of lawyers and “political bloggers” calling themselves “Impeach Leni Team,” held a press conference on Thursday morning to announce that they are building up a complaint against Robredo.

The panel included lawyers Bruce Rivera, who used to represent alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles, Tom Berenguer, and Ahmed Paglinawan; political science professor Antonio Contreras; and Trixie Cruz-Angeles.
Department of Interior and Local Government Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing III was at the event to introduce them to the media.
During the press conference, radio reporter Jill Resontoc asked who was funding the case build-up and planned filing of an impeachment complaint.
Rivera, the spokesperson of the group, replied that they were not funded by anyone, adding that they would pay for themselves during meetings.

“[T]his is the popular misconception that we are funded by anyone. We are not funded by anyone. We are doing this. We have careers at hand,” he said.
He then noted that being supporters of the President “does not make Duterte our principal.”
“Hindi po totoo ‘yan. Parang pang-LP (Liberal Party) po yata ‘yung dialogue na ‘yan,” he said, referring to the former ruling party being linked to alleged plots to oust Duterte from MalacaƱang.
Rivera’s remark made other Duterte supporters on the side of the packed room laugh, which in turn prompted newspaper reporter Ben Rosario to say: “‘Wag n’yong lalagyan ng malisya! Reporter po kami… ‘Wag hong gano’n!”
Actress Vivian Velez, who has been seen in protests in front of Robredo’s office, shot back at him, saying: “Sumasagot lang din naman kami!”
Angeles then stood in a bid to calm everyone, as more supporters egged on Velez’s remarks.
Resontoc then said: “Malinis ‘yung tanong ko,” to which the actress replied, “Malinis din ‘yung sagot namin.”
Rivera then told reporters: “Hindi namin kayo pinapatamaan, ‘wag kayong ma-hurt.”

Tension rose again when GMA News reporter Sandra Aguinaldo asked the group about the 7,000 killings that Robredo pointed out in her controversial video message for a UN side session last week.
Densing scored Robredo for giving a “wrong” version of the so-called “palit-ulo” scheme, as well as on the death count of the drug war.
“Sinasabi na for so many months na hindi ‘yun ‘yung data, pero binubuo pa rin nila at sinalo ng pandaigdigang komunidad,” the DILG executive said.
Rivera then quipped: “At kinakain ng media din!”
As Aguinaldo tried to ask her follow-up question, supporters on the sidelines said, “Yes, yes! Biased media!” Angeles again tried to pacify the crowd.
Some cameramen apparently took offense at being labeled biased, with one saying, “‘Wag na kayong magpatawag kung biased.”
The end of the press conference, however, saw reporters and “Impeach Leni Team” seemingly patching things up.
Robredo’s critics eye the submission of their impeachment complaint when Congress resumes session in May.

DZRH suspends Mocha Uson’s program over anti-Robredo remarks

Radio station DZRH has suspended a commentary program anchored by Mocha Uson, the singer-dancer who has become President Duterte’s ardent supporter and propagandist.
The “indefinite suspension,” confirmed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer by DZRH personnel, came after the radio station received complaints from listeners, who found malicious Uson’s remarks against Vice President Leni Robredo, that were captured on live streaming on social media.

DZRH is operated by the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC).
One of the complainants, Jozy Acosta-Nisperos, head of the civil society group The Silent Majority, sent MBC president Ruperto Nicdao Jr.. a formal letter that pointed out Uson’s violations of broadcasting rules:
“On March 18, during a live streaming of her segment on DZRH, Uson verbally attacked Vice President Leni Robredo in a coarse, vicious language dripping with malice—an act that she has regularly resorted to as a propagandist of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“What Uson does for a living is none of our business, but in that live steaming, apparently she overstepped the boundaries of decency.
“To quote:
“’Kasi nga sinungaling ka at fake news ka… Huwag mong araw-arawin ang katangahan mo! Expletive (bleeped out)… Bumili ka ng utak! … Nakakahawa na yang katangahan mo … Sobra lang talagang nakakagalit ang kabobohan ng babae na to…’ ”
“To paraphrase: The Vice President is a liar and a bearer of fake news. She is stupid, an idiot. Her stupidity arouses my anger.
“In addition, Uson also attacks the Philippine media:
“’Ito namang mga lokal na presstitutes natin puro pera ang iniisip kaysa sa kapakanan ng bayan…’”
“To paraphrase: The local media are nothing but paid hacks.
“May we point out that, in the 2007 Broadcast Code of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Uson is liable of having violated certain sections:

“Article 2. ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARIES
“Sec. 2. Public affairs programs and commentaries shall be handled only by persons who have thorough knowledge of and practice broadcast ethics.
“Sec. 4. Public affairs programs shall strive to elicit responsible views on public issues, concerns and events from all sectors of society.
“May we also raise the point of whether Uson has a professional broadcaster’s license?”

Robredo did not betray public trust — law dean

A law dean on Tuesday said Vice President Leni Robredo’s video message for a United Nations event is not proof of her supposed betrayal of public trust.

Fr. Ranhillo Aquino, dean of the Sen Beda Graduate School of Law, told Radyo Veritas that there was nothing wrong in Robredo’s decision to express concern over the human rights violations linked to the administration’s war on drugs.

He said everybody is entitled to an opinion and that Robredo still has her freedom of speech and expression despite being the vice president of the country.
The said video prompted Marcos loyalists’ Oliver Lozano and Melchor Chavez to file an impeachment complaint against Robredo, citing culpable violation of the Constitution, acts of injustice, and betrayal of public trust.

In her video message for the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, Robredo said, “Drug abuse should not be treated as one that can be solved with bullets alone. It must be regarded as it truly is: a complex public health issue, linked intimately with poverty and social inequality.”
Robredo, who is a member of the Liberal Party, has been at odds with President Rodrigo Duterte. Since taking office, Duterte has called for a strong campaign against illegal drugs. Reports said more than 7,000 people have been killed by the police and by vigilante groups in relation to the drug war.

BIR files P9.5-billion tax evasion case vs. Mighty Corp.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue filed before the Department of Justice, on Wednesday, a P9.5-billion tax evasion case against homegrown cigarette manufacturer Mighty Corp. for allegedly using fake tax stamps to deprive the government of excise tax payments.
Since late 2014, the BIR has been implementing the Internal Revenue Stamps Integrated System on tobacco products. These stamps ensure that the correct excise taxes are paid.

Nongovernment Action for Economic Reforms had pegged Mighty’s tax liabilities at about P15 billion, based on the volume of cigarette packs that bore fake stamps earlier confiscated by the BOC and the BIR in Zamboanga City, Pampanga, General Santos City, Cebu City and Tacloban City late last month and early this month.
Last week, Albay Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda told reporters that Mighty’s basic arrears could reach up to P25 billion, excluding interest and penalties for nonpayment of excise taxes.
In a statement, Mighty said it “welcomes the filing by the BIR of the complaint as it provides us an opportunity to clear our names and show we violated no tax laws.”
“We will continue to cooperate with government in its continuing effort at tax collection,” Mighty said.

Internal Revenue Commissioner Caesar R. Dulay had said that the proliferation of counterfeit cigarette tax stamps “definitely impact” on the collection of excise taxes.
Preliminary BIR data showed that total excise tax collections last year rose to P163.5 billion from P158.3 billion in 2015.
Despite the increase in the total excise tax take, collections from tobacco products declined to P91.6 billion in 2016 from 2015’s P99.5 billion. This was despite higher rates implemented last year than in 2015 under Republic Act No. 10351 or the Sin Tax Reform Law.
In January, the Inquirer first reported that the BIR was investigating Mighty as its products had been found bearing fake cigarette tax stamps.
